5 Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Advertising Agency

While this is a pretty simple question dating back to many of our elementary school experiences, developing a relationship with your advertising agency can be just as simple.  We know it can be intimidating to engage the services of a professional, especially if it’s your first time. So I have put together five simple techniques you can use to get the most out of your agency experience.

 

Tell us your goals.

We are like sponges. Tell us everything you can about your project. What have you tried before? What worked? What didn’t? At times, you may come to us without a specific goal in mind, but rather a general idea or concept. The more information you can share, the more we can help you identify measurable goals and ultimately what you hope to accomplish. Help us, help you. Also, if your boss hates the color purple, it would be wise to share that with us in meeting number one. Seriously.

 

Patience is a virtue.

Great advertising takes time. As does the time that goes into making great advertising.  Plan ahead so that we have adequate time to put our best thought and care into your project. We can move at lightning speed when needed, but the funny thing about lightning is that it’s both beautiful and dangerous.

 

Be transparent with your budget.

As creative professionals, we love to shoot for the moon, but we’re also realists.  We understand that no one has unlimited funds.  If you have a predetermined budget that you need to stick to, tell us that upfront.  We will deliver concepts for a campaign that fall within your identified budget. And that will make both of us happy.

 

Be willing to listen.

Make no mistake, the old mantra “the customer is always right” certainly applies in our office, but the more you can stay open minded to our opinions, the more we can help. Isn’t that why you came to us in the first place? While we don’t always have the perfect solution, we might suggest ideas that you haven’t thought of or that may push you out of your comfort zone. It’s scary, we know.  Just be open and objective. You might find you kind of like it.

 

Have a little fun.

We all got into advertising because we love the work and love the people we’re working with.  Don’t be afraid to crack a joke, fill your emails with smiley faces or drop subtle puns from time to time.  In general we are creative minded people and thrive on personal interactions. The more fun we have together the better this will be for all of us. And if you really like to have fun, we’ll be sure our Creative Director Chris Henson sits in on a meeting with you.
